Lynda D. " Finally I got some better pictures of the piebald grackle tonight. They are attached to send to your friend. This is the first bird that I previously referred to as the whiteheaded blackbird. It is in fact a grackle. The other bird with less white is the second bird I’ve seen with this colour variation. Interesting that they are both here making me wonder if they are from the same gene pool?

Bill Russell. Bill called me after seeing a turtle on the weekend. I sent him a picture of the underside of a blanding turtle.
This is his email back to me on August 29, 2007 :
Hi Mark
Thanks for the bottom shot. This is exactly what I saw. There is no doubt at all that it was a Blanding Turtle that I saw.

April 10, 2007
Don Buck : This weekend I saw a large Owl flying around our backyard. There were numerous birds in my feeder before this guy appeared. Would he be feeding on the small birds? The birds never came back till the next day. The owl was brown in colour and tan underneath. He looked to be about two feet from top to bottom and wingspan about the same.

Signed, terrified homeowner Eyre Blvd.

August 9, 2005
By Celine Lagace : There has been a sighting of an uncommon bird yesterday Aug. 9th 2005 at Gillies lake; (the white-rumped sand-piper.) It has no spots with short yellow legs and slate solid gray in color whith a white bottom. It is smaller then the spotted sandpiper. According to my bird book this species breeds in the Artic but feeds in this range in the spring and fall. I also happen to have seen the red crest of a ruby-crowned kinglet this spring on Norman street along the river. This is also a rare sight: Only when the bird is angry is the crest raised. Happy birdwatching!

I was surprised to hear a sound under the camper parked in the driveway and then watch as this little falcon emerged to fly across the street into a tree. That evening when I got home the kids had found a dead young Blackburnian warbler laying on the driveway. Surprising, since I live in Melrose on the bus route.

Block 12 today our GPS unit was not connected due to poor satilite availability. While waiting a female Ruby Throated Humming Bird flew in. Buzzed just over my head. The 2 of us just stayed still. The bird buzzed the PINK ribbon I had tied on the tree next to me.

The bird then sat on a branch next to the ribbon for 30 seconds. ~2 m from my head. The bird then went back to my last ribbon and checked it out, then the ribbon before that. She sat there for a minute before buzzing back over us for a few seconds then flying off.

What a great bird encounter ! ! I was all goose bumps for 5 minutes !

Cold came so fast this year that many of the trees in town and in the bush still have leaves on them. Even the Larch have not lost their needles. It takes almost all winter for some trees to lose their leaves.

By Mike Picote : On Kraft Creek Road just before his house there is a crow that has been hanging around. the colour of this bird is black, grey and white. Looks more like a hawk. Very unusual colouring. It is said that a crow that has been scared when very young may cause it's feathers to turn white.

White pelican
at Gillies Lake. This is the first of many birds that would be sighted over the next couple of years. Stories of the birds in Horwood lake eating fish fed to them by fishermen, Nighthawk Lake and Bigwater. I have a good picture of one on Gillies Lake. (see Friday June 24, 1994 Daily Press)

BROWN PELICAN
. This is very unusual! Was not sure this is what was being seen really. Turns out Richard Moore and Barb Riordan were at different sides of Pearl lake. I talked to both of them, not knowing the other had contacted me. The bird was seen diving from a height into the lake to catch fish. Only the Brown Pelican dives when it fishes. I spent many hours over the next couple of days but never saw it and never heard from anyone else about the bird.
